American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS) collaborated with the National Hispanic Caucus’ newest project, titled ‘Conexión Nacional Juvenil Latina’ (CxNJL). Conexión Nacional Juvenil Latina, better known as ‘Conexión’, is the representative body of Hispanic Baptist youth belonging to the American Baptist Churches of the United States and Puerto Rico. The Conexión team’s efforts are geared towards one objective: to focus on developing strategies to raise up the next youth leadership generation, establish communication between youth ministries in the regions, and provide youth training workshops on a national level. Recently, Conexión carried out a project called “Inmersion San Francisco” which took place between April 29th and May 1st in the bay area of San Francisco, California. The 4 main objectives of the Immersion project were to meet the youth of the surrounding area, connect with the newer generations, share the good news of Salvation, and train Christian leaders. Conexión visited several churches in the region to share the Word, facilitated 3 training workshops within one of the pastoral meetings held and even participated in the National Hispanic Caucus’ bi-annual meeting. The visit to San Francisco served to improve communication between the youth and the pastoral ministry as well as to build a new phone directory of the bay area after the pandemic. Additionally, the region's local youth organization 1 Truth Ministries (1TM), invited Conexión to meet their team, participate in their “Rooted” event and collaborate to record a special podcast. ABHMS awarded a $2,500 grant to support the team’s efforts, giving four people from the CxNJL team the opportunity to be the delegates deployed to the California bay area - from Puerto Rico, Juliana Morales (focus collaborator) and Pastor Wilfredo Mercado (general coordinator) and from New York, Melissa Esmeral (secretary) and Reverend Abner E. Cotto Bonilla (liaison facilitator). Thanks to the grant provided by ABHMS, Conexión Nacional Juvenil Latina managed to impact 10 churches, provide an intergenerational training workshop to approximately 12 pastors and share a message of hope to more than 130 youth, not including the adults or children present. The delegates accomplished the proposed mission, and the Lord exceeded all the team’s expectations; above all, the team was able to answer God’s call to meet the needs of our youth and connect with the surrounding congregations of the San Francisco region.
