Today’s WORD (Text)               Psalm 40:5-10

5/ You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you. Were I to proclaim and tell of them, they would be more than can be counted.  6/ Sacrifice and offering you do not desire, but you have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required. 7/ Then I said, “Here I am; in the scroll of the book it is written of me. 8/ I delight to do your will, O m God; your law is within my heart.  9/ I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; see, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O Lord. 10/ I have not hidden your saving help within my heart, I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your steadfast love and faithfulness from the great congregation.

Today’s Witness

In today’s word, the psalmist models the vocation or work of the believer which is to testify continuously to God’s wonderful deeds.  While God does not require continuous worship from the faithful, the faithful feel the urge to continuously worship God whose generosity, grace and kindness are incomparable to that of any other.  God works in our lives to provide deliverance, saving help, and steadfast love.  Who would not serve a God like this?  Who would not testify to such a marvelous and faithful God?

Today’s Invitation

Name one wonderful deed that God has done in your life recently that you cannot stop thanking God for.

Today’s Prayer

God, we come before you as witnesses, whose vocation is to continuously tell the story of your goodness.  Amplify our voices and our praise that the world may know of your faithfulness.

The Passionary Intention

Today, I choose to live my life with passion.  Today, I intend to follow Christ more nearly, love more dearly and incarnate God’s grace more clearly by asking myself three questions:

  • Where will I follow Christ today?
  • To whom shall I demonstrate Jesus’ love and justice today?
  • How can I play my part in practicing the presence of Christ, right here, right now?

The Passionary Movement Word and Witness devotion is published weekdays (Monday – Friday).  Dr. Jeffrey Haggray, Executive Director of American Baptist Home Mission Societies is the author of today’s devotion.
