Today’s WORD (Text)               Psalm 107: 1-3

1/ O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever.

2/ Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, those he redeemed from trouble

3/ and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.

Today’s Witness

The worship of God can have a revolutionary impact in the society. The psalmist invites all those who have been delivered from there many troubles to say aloud what God has done in their lives.  The psalmist creates a platform and a framework for public testimony, a framework for giving thanks to God whose love is steadfast and enduring in all generations.  This platform makes it possible for people that have been oppressed in every nation and generation to locate themselves and their predicament within the framework of God’s goodness.  Whether they are the Hebrew people fleeing Egypt, or indigenous persons in North American struggling to survive European invaders; whether captured Africans transported to South and North America to be enslaved, or the Burmese people of modern-day Myanmar suffering persecution and injustice at the hands of a military junta; in all nations and in all generations our God, Jehovah, has the power and the means to rescue the people from trouble.  God is able to gather God’s people from all the lands, from the east and the west, from the north and the south. Let the redeemed of the Lord say as much!

Today’s Invitation

What is your preferred story of God rescuing a nation from trouble?

Today’s Prayer

Dear God, we pray today for people throughout the world who are facing persecution and who feel powerless to overcome their predicaments.  We petition your intervention on behalf of those who can not fend for themselves.  We pray especially today for the people of Myanmar who are suffering unprecedented assaults on their villages and communities from a military junta that seems intent on dehumanizing them.  We pray that global powers will be moved to demonstrate humanitarian concern and intervention in the name of justice and righteousness.  Hear the prayers of your people today as they cry out to you in their distress, in the Name of Jesus, Amen,

The Passionary Intention

Today, I choose to live my life with passion.  Today, I intend to follow Christ more nearly, love more dearly and incarnate God’s grace more clearly by asking myself three questions:

  • Where will I follow Christ today?
  • To whom shall I demonstrate Jesus’ love and justice today?
  • How can I play my part in practicing the presence of Christ, right here, right now?

The Passionary Movement Word and Witness devotion is published weekdays (Monday – Friday).  Dr. Jeffrey Haggray, Executive Director of American Baptist Home Mission Societies is the author of today’s devotion.
