It is May 2020; we are in the second month of quarantine in the United States due to the coronavirus. Hispanics have also been affected by illness, unemployment, financial loss. And yes, we are all in this together.

Since 1949, mental health month has also been celebrated in May (perhaps it was not a coincidence). This month everyone is allowed to express our anxiety about illness or depression from the global pandemic.

In the 32 years of practicing psychiatry around Philadelphia, today the Hispanic community is more willing to recognize and seek help for problems such as, hyperactivity, autism, anxiety, and depression, although this was not always the case. I remember interviewing a 50-year-old woman and asking her why she was depressed. With her eyes downcast she replied, "but no one will know"? It was the first time she had talked about being sexually abused as a girl.

Today, I do not hear so many people say that the reason they have depression is because God punished them. Even if I keep hearing people say that God cannot forgive them because what they did is unforgivable.

There are other problems that are not allowed to be mentioned, but they should be addressed, all kinds of addiction, sexual, drug addiction, alcoholism, gambling, and aggressive behavior. In my practice, half of the women who seek help due to depression or anxiety have suffered from sexual or physical abuse. In the same way, it is necessary to treat the person as a perpetrator of violence even in prison.

I can do everything in Christ who strengthens me. Phil. 4:13.

The goal of mental health is the normalization of symptoms and human development. The depressed person who can enjoy themselves at a family party, who wants to start working again. I have seen three depressed men who decided to study robotics and today they work, and they are not my patients anymore.

Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old, they will not turn from it. Prov. 22:6.

For the hyperactive child, being able to finish their homework on their own, finish college, medical school, and end up being a child psychiatrist.

Our family was affected by the coronavirus with the death of my aunt, pastor Mercedes Ortiz de Gonzalez. She pastored for many years the Guayanilla Baptist Church in P.R. In addition to not being at home, she dies on Long Island, New York. Her husband, children, grandchildren and family did not have the opportunity to be together, but we celebrate her life by phone, email, and other social networks. We celebrate a life given to God.

Today, we celebrate mental health month. There are also physical and spiritual health. Our goal is to perfect our health. And we are in this together.
