While our students are adjusting to a new normal for what this school year means, it’s not too early to look towards the fall and think about scholarships for next year!

Now is the time of year when private organizations receive scholarship applications for the coming academic year. There are lots of scholarships available out there- a quick Google search will turn up many results! ABHMS offers scholarships to undergrad and grad students (more info on eligibility can be found HERE). Here are a few tips from our scholarships department:

  • Be sure you meet the scholarship requirements! If the scholarship is for full-time students only and you are part-time, please don’t apply. It wastes your time filling out the application and our time reading the application.
  • Don’t wait until the last minute to submit your application! Computer glitches happen, you might lose your transcript, you get the flu the day before, you are in a car accident- all of these things have happened. Get the application in early!
  • Don’t fill out the application for your child! It’s natural to want to help your kids- especially to help them get money for school! But it reflects poorly on everyone when you submit their application. I can tell that you wrote their essay. And when you accidentally put your name in the “Student Name” spot, that’s a dead giveaway. Empower you, children, to take care of themselves. Everyone will feel better!
  • Answer the questions accurately! You go by “Tim” even though your legal name is “John” then be sure to fill in your legal name. Read what the essay is asking of you and answer accordingly. Your 1,000-word essay on the Trinity is not impressive when we asked for 500 words about leadership.
  • Write a thank-you note! This isn’t a requirement but is a good idea. It offers a personal touch and brightens the scholarship committee’s day. And if we have extra funds or opportunities for students, the first who come to mind are those we hear from beyond their application.
